Project Overview

Project Scope

Switchable Trigger Module

The objective of this project was to develop an innovative, switchable trigger system for integration into the Sony PS5 controller’s trigger-bumper module. The miniature footprint presented an array of challenges to achieve the desirable result.

Spatial optimization

Navigating extreme internal volume constraints dictated by a strict minimalist aesthetic.

System Integration

Ensuring seamless backward compatibility with legacy security infrastructure.

Component Selection

Sourcing high-durability, sub-miniature switching hardware capable of heavy industrial use.

Complex Cable Management

Developing intricate internal routing to maintain a clean profile despite high-density wiring.

After discarding the initial approach of using metal for switching mechanism, the internal space within the trigger was optimised to maximize usable volume. This allowed to develop a concept using plastic switches where geometry of the switch played a crucial role in taking load associated with game play.

The trigger body was redesigned into two parts, incorporating a carriage that securely houses the switching mechanism. This carriage slides and locks into place within the main trigger body. A dedicated testing rig was created using FDM-printed parts and pneumatic pistons, for conducting cycle tests with a counter. The design successfully met all desired performance criteria. Following Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews, the complete design pack was handed over to the CMOs.
